We all have those pesky fat deposits that won’t go away despite exercise and dieting. These areas seem to resist our attempts at improvement and are most commonly found over the lower abdomen, hips, thighs and knees. Their prominence has been immortalized with phrases such as “love handles”, “arm fat”, “saddle bags” and “muffin top”. We see them as being something unto themselves, something that stops us in our tracks as we focus on them and as having a shape of their own. But looking at the big picture, these bumps rather interrupt the flow of clean lines that define our body and therefore limit the beauty of the torso and legs.
Another way of looking at it is that when our gaze moves up and down an object, that object tends to look long. When our gaze is stopped in the middle by something that catches our eye, the whole object appears shorter. Liposuction, from an artistic standpoint smoothes out these bumps and restores the sleek and clean lines of beauty while at the same time lending length and narrowness.
Liposuction is more well known for its misconceptions than truths. Two of the biggest misconceptions are that it helps with weight loss and that liposuction is a risky procedure. In fact, studies show liposuction to be among the safest procedures performed by a board certified plastic surgeon. That makes sense because most plastic surgeries involve making a space under the skin and therefore the blood supply to the skin is diminished. That is not the case with liposuction where tiny incisions are made and fat is suctioned, leaving all of the blood vessels intact. Therefore, liposuction is very safe and is especially safe if it is not used as a weight loss technique.
Patients who are the best candidates for liposuction are in at least relatively good shape and of normal or slightly over normal weight. Since liposuction is not a weight loss technique, patients who are significantly overweight are much better off first losing the excess weight and then having the procedure. The suction then “puts the finishing touches” on a patient’s efforts at self improvement. Patients also may continue to lose weight after their procedure depending on their goals and schedule.
Liposuction can be very rewarding in the right patient. A consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon can help patients understand if liposuction is right for them and how this wonderful procedure can help get them to their aesthetic goals.
Power-assisted liposuction is one technique used to perform liposculpture. In this technique, the targeted tissue is filled with fluid. After a short period, we suction the area. Power-assisted suction can remove fat in areas where fat is more difficult to remove.
The areas most often suctioned are hips or muffin tops. We also see many clients about outer thighs, inner thighs, and inner knees. Less often we offer suction for the flanks. These are rolls of extra fat over the sides and back of the chest. We also do the side of the breast which extends toward the underarm, the calves, and the upper arms. These procedures are called arm liposuction, tummy liposuction, and muffin top liposuction.
Patients often ask how much weight they will lose with liposuction. It’s important to recognize that liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure. It is a sculpting technique. It reduces problem areas and restores the smooth contour of the body and legs.
Liposuction is the most natural and effective treatment for removing unwanted fat. Typical targets are the hips, outer and inner thighs, and inner knees. It is useful for both men and women. Saltwater with the same composition found in our body is placed in the area to be suctioned. Then under very low pressure, the fat is gently removed. The skin and support systems of the body are maintained. This procedure will achieve long-lasting and youthful results. Patients note being able to fit into clothes better after the procedure. They can wear new styles of apparel that are more flattering to their shape. That makes shopping and exploring new styles of clothing more exciting.

The office staff will also discuss liposuction surgery cost (liposuction prices). If you haven’t yet seen liposuction before and after photos on the Doctor’s website, the Doctor and office staff can review actual patient before and after photos.[/cq_vc_timeline_item][cq_vc_timeline_item itemtitle=”Schedule your Procedure”]After your consultation and when you decide to have liposuction, choose the best time to fit the procedure into your schedule. Healing from liposuction is one of the fastest in cosmetic surgery and all patients are walking outside the next day.[/cq_vc_timeline_item][cq_vc_timeline_item itemtitle=”Preoperative Appointment”]Once you have a booked a date for surgery, the office will also schedule a second appointment for you to meet with the Doctor who will finalize the plan, discuss liposuction risks and benefits of the procedure and also any alternatives. For example, one topic of discussion might be whether liposuction versus coolsculpting is best for you. Your photographs will be taken and your medical history evaluated to determine your suitability for surgery. Labs and medications will be written for and you will be prepared for the procedure. Your measurements will be taken so that after your procedure, a premeasured garment can be placed to decrease postoperative swelling and promote healing.[/cq_vc_timeline_item][cq_vc_timeline_item itemtitle=”Three Days Prior to Surgery”]A member of the office staff will call you to make sure you are feeling well and to make sure all of the lab results are back.[/cq_vc_timeline_item][cq_vc_timeline_item itemtitle=”Night Before Surgery”]The anesthesiologist who will be caring for you during the procedure will call you to briefly go over any medical history and to tell you what to expect when you are at the Surgery Center and make a recommendation for the type of anesthesia that is tailored for your needs.[/cq_vc_timeline_item][cq_vc_timeline_item itemtitle=”The Day of Surgery”]You will arrive to the Surgery Center about one hour prior to your procedure. You will be greeted by a nurse thoroughly experienced in the care of patients prior, during and after a procedure. When patients have multiple areas of the body liposculptured, the commonest type of anesthesia performed is called Monitored Anesthesia Care, or MAC. During MAC, intravenous sedation is given by a board certified anesthesiologist so that, along with the numbing effect provided by the suction technique, has the patient either totally asleep or at various levels of indifference to what is going on around them.
You will meet the anesthesiologist prior to your procedure and you can discuss your wishes as to the level of anesthesia you wish and the anesthesiologist will also make recommendations.[/cq_vc_timeline_item][cq_vc_timeline_item itemtitle=”Preparation for Surgery”]The preoperative nurse will place an IV and antibiotics will be given intravenously. Though liposuction is not painful and well tolerated, some anesthesiologists give oral Tylenol and valium prior to the procedure. These are both excellent pain relievers and don’t cause nausea like narcotics do. Some anesthesiologists also premedicate patients against nausea to make the postoperative experience pleasant and easy.[/cq_vc_timeline_item][cq_vc_timeline_item itemtitle=”Surgery”]You will be taken by the nurse to the operating room where you will be greeted by another nurse, the anesthesiologist, the Doctor and the Doctor’s assistant who will have you lie down on the operating table where monitors are placed. The anesthesiologist will relax you with medication given through the IV and monitor you throughout your procedure. At the end of the procedure, dressings will be placed and you will be transported to the recovery room where you will be cared for by the recovery room nurse and the anesthesiologist.
Once you are fully awake and able to care for yourself, the nurse will call your loved one to come back into the recovery room, greet you and go over the postoperative instructions. You will be told the time for your postoperative appointment, which is usually the next day.[/cq_vc_timeline_item][cq_vc_timeline_item itemtitle=”Evening of Surgery”]The Doctor likes when patients call him the evening of the day of surgery to make sure you are doing well and to answer any questions you may have.[/cq_vc_timeline_item][cq_vc_timeline_item itemtitle=”Postoperative Appointments”]Patients are seen usually for several appointments after their liposuction to monitor their healing, to answer any questions and to make recommendations for the level of activity that can be achieved over time. In general, most patients are walking a couple of miles at a time 3-5 days after surgery and can drive short distances after a few days. Patients can use the elliptical machine three weeks after their procedure and can jog/run anywhere from three to four weeks after liposuction. When liposculpture is performed over the torso, in the area of the lower abdomen or hips/flanks, core exercises should be delayed until 5 or 6 weeks after surgery.[/cq_vc_timeline_item][/cq_vc_timeline]
