EYELID SURGERY

The patient is a 44 year old man who noted that he had trouble seeing his eyes in the mirror and in photos. His wife encouraged him to seek consultation for eyelid surgery. At his cosmetic surgery consultation, he also noted decreased vision from extra skin hanging down from his upper lid. He was also bothered by the puffiness of the lower eyelids. His vision was otherwise excellent but he mentioned that he had frequent dryness of his eyes and used liquid tears.

On examination the patient had excess tissues of the upper and lower eyelids which made him a good candidate for eyelid surgery. There was also inflammation of the mucosa which correlated with the patient’s symptoms of dryness.
At surgery, which was performed under anesthesia, excess upper lid skin was removed and the fat pads of the lower eyelid were removed with internal incisions to preserve lid support. Additionally, a lid support procedure was performed to strengthen his lower eyelid.
The patient did very well after surgery and noted a significant decrease in eyelid irritation and dryness. He was also happy with his cosmetic result and stated he could see his eyes.
